What is the Longevity of My Roof?

Jun 10, 2019 | Roofing

Under your roof lies loved ones, valuable possessions, and memories. Protecting those things is your roof and while they last a while, no roof is indestructible. It’s important to know when you should replace your roof. So that begs the question, how long will my roof last? Well, the answer is that it depends on the material installed on your roof.

Asphalt Shingles

The most common roofs are made of asphalt and composite shingles. These are typically the cheapest and have the shortest lifespan. While generally low-maintenance, asphalt roofing may experience heavy curled shingles and punctures from limbs. With appropriate upkeep, your asphalt roof should last between 15 and 30 years.

Wood Shingles

While a stunning choice for your roof, wood shingles and shake roofing are known for their need for attention. You will need to monitor moisture levels on your wood roof by cleaning any debris off regularly. If possible, use only previously treated wood to ensure moisture protection. If taken care of appropriately, your wood shingle roof should last up to 20 or 30 years.

Metal Roof

If you are looking for a low-maintenance roofing option that may last a lifetime, a metal roof may be your best option. While often more expensive than other materials, metal roofing comes in an assortment of colors and styles. If installed properly, this roof will quickly pay itself off with a lifespan of a minimum of 20 to 40 years.

Tile Roof

The most durable roofs are tile and slate. While materials and installment may initially be costly, this material needs barely any upkeep. Especially popular in warm climates, this roofing is stunning and filled with longevity. If properly installed, tile and slate roofing can last up to 100 years or more.

Our experience with Greenawalt for our new roof and gutters was absolutely seamless. Brandon Garman did a very thorough assessment of our roof and determined exactly what we needed to fit our needs. We had a lot of questions along the way and he always made himself available to talk through the technical aspects. The price was fair and the job was scheduled quickly. We are very satisfied with the workmanship and quality of our new roof. We felt very taken care of throughout the process thanks to Brandon and Jess!"
